The Spiritual Gift of Prophet
Speaking Gift — Ephesians 4:11 — And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers.
προφήτης (prof-ay’-tace) — /pró, beforehand + /phēmí, elevating. One who speaks the preferred words of God — proclaimer, oracle, utterance, revelator, inspired.
The Spiritual Gift of Prophet as Defined
The Prophet speaks the Word of God with clarity and urgency. John the Baptist proclaimed Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (MAT 3:1-2). The Prophet does not originate the message — God does. Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost (2PE 1:21).

The Spiritual Gift of Prophet as Named
Elisha (2KI 6:12), Moses (EXO 5:1), Jonah (JON 3:4), John the Baptist (JOH 1:29), and Jesus Himself (MAT 13:57) are all named as Prophets in Scripture. The gift spans both Testaments and operates across every generation.
The Spiritual Gift of Prophet as Ministers
Prophecy is more profitable than tongues (1CO 14:6), must not be despised (1TH 5:20), and will cease at the completion of God’s purposes (1CO 13:8). The Prophet points people to God — not to themselves.
Serving in The Spiritual Gift of Prophet
Avoid sensationalism. Avoid speaking beyond what God has revealed. Avoid using the gift to gain influence or control. The Prophet’s message must always be measured against Scripture.
