The Spiritual Gift of Interpretation of Tongues

ἑρμηνεία (her-may-ni’-ah) — translation, explanation, interpretation. From Ἑρμῆς (Hermes), messenger of the gods — to translate, explain, make clear. English derivative: hermeneutics — the science of Biblical interpretation. Combined with γλῶσσα (language), this gift forms a compound office that serves the entire assembly.
Interpretation of Tongues as Defined

Interpretation of Tongues as Named
Paul lists interpretation of tongues as one of many gifts distributed by the Spirit (1CO 12:10). It operates within order — two or three may speak in tongues, each in turn, and one must interpret. If no interpreter is present, the speaker must keep silence in the church (1CO 14:26-28).
Interpretation of Tongues as Signs
The gift reaches back to Isaiah’s prophecy: With stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people (ISA 28:11). Tongues with interpretation is a sign to unbelievers (1CO 14:21-22) and serves the edification of the whole church when properly ordered.
Serving in Interpretation of Tongues
Avoid interpreting without the prompting of the Spirit. Avoid embellishing the message beyond what was spoken. Avoid operating in the gift outside the order God has established in Scripture.
