Every church has someone who seems to know when something is off before anyone else does. They cannot always explain it immediately. They just know. Weeks later, when the situation unfolds and everyone else is surprised, that person is not surprised at all. That is not intuition. That is the gift of Discernment.
What the Greek Reveals
Paul names this gift in 1 Corinthians 12:10 as diakrisis pneumatōn — the distinguishing of spirits. The word diakrisis comes from two roots: dia, meaning “through,” and krinō, meaning “to judge” or “to separate.” Together they describe the act of cutting through something to separate what is genuine from what is not.
The gift is not a general sense of wisdom or good judgment. It is a specific, Spirit-granted ability to distinguish between what is operating from God, what is operating from the flesh, and what is operating from a spirit that is not of God at all. Those are three very different sources, and the person with this gift can tell them apart.
What This Looks Like in Practice
A believer with the gift of Discernment is difficult to deceive. Christ’s presence in their life creates a kind of spiritual alertness that is not paranoia — it is clarity. They consistently compare what people say to what God has said. They examine conversations for truth not because they are suspicious by nature, but because they are wired to test what they hear against the standard of Scripture.
When a false teacher moves through a congregation, the person with Discernment picks it up. When a ministry decision is being driven by pride rather than the Spirit, they sense it. When someone in the congregation is operating in the flesh and calling it God, they know it — often before the person themselves does.
God also uses this gift to warn. A believer with genuine Discernment will sometimes carry a deep unease about a direction, a person, or a decision that they cannot fully articulate yet. Over time they learn to bring that warning forward rather than dismiss it, because experience has taught them that the unease is usually confirmed.
Discernment Is Not Criticism
This gift is frequently misidentified — or worse, misused. A critical spirit that tears people down and calls it discernment is not operating in a spiritual gift. It is operating in the flesh.
The genuine gift of Discernment does not delight in finding fault. It carries a burden. A person with this gift would rather be wrong about their concern than right. They are not looking for problems. They are watching for them because the Body of Christ is their concern and they cannot turn that off.
The fruit of genuine Discernment is protection, not division. When it is operating correctly and the Pastor is wise enough to listen to it, the gift of Discernment acts as an early warning system for the local church. It catches deception before it takes root. It identifies problems while they are still manageable. It keeps the Body from being led somewhere God never intended.
The Cost of Ignoring It
A church that has no one operating in the gift of Discernment — or worse, a church where the Pastor dismisses the people who carry it — is a church that is vulnerable. Paul’s warning in Acts 20:29 was not hypothetical: “For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.” The gift of Discernment is part of how God protects the flock from those wolves.
The person with this gift needs to be known by their Pastor. Not to run the church by veto, but to serve as a trusted voice that the Pastor can bring concerns to and receive honest, Spirit-tested feedback from. That relationship, when it exists, is a significant safeguard for any congregation.
