The Spiritual Gift of Evangelist
Speaking Gift — Ephesians 4:11 — And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers.
εὐαγγελιστής (yoo-ang-ghel-is-tace’) — /eú, good + /angellō, announce. The glad messenger — one who announces the good news of Jesus Christ.
The Spiritual Gift of Evangelist as Defined
The Evangelist carries the Gospel across every boundary. Philip opened his mouth and began at the scripture and preached unto the Ethiopian eunuch Jesus (ACS 8:35). Peter preached to three thousand souls in a single day (ACS 2:38). The gift is not confined to a stage — it operates wherever the lost can be reached.

The Spiritual Gift of Evangelist as Named
Philip (ACS 21:8) is the only person specifically named an Evangelist in Scripture. The gift also flows through a chain: Kimball led Moody, Moody led Chapman, Chapman led Sunday, Sunday led Ham, Ham led Billy Graham. One gifted Evangelist multiplies across generations.
The Spiritual Gift of Evangelist as Ministers
Paul charged Timothy: do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry (2TI 4:5). The Great Commission (MAT 28:18-20) is the Evangelist’s mandate. The gift is urgent, outward-facing, and never satisfied while the lost remain unreached.
Serving in The Spiritual Gift of Evangelist
Avoid reducing the Gospel to an emotional appeal without content. Avoid measuring success only by visible decisions. Avoid neglecting the local church while pursuing outreach. The Evangelist feeds the church — not just the harvest field.
